Recovering Nurses-Forum

Take your time! - 2008/01/30 10:51 I am a recovering addict and just happen to be a nurse! I was diverting IV moprphine from the icu that i worked in and was drug tested by my employer. I entered Kentucky's Alternative Recovery Effort for nurses and remained in that program and clean for 3 years! During this time I worked at a prison as a treatmet nurse. After my narcotic restriction was lifted I was so excited that I could be a "real nurse" again and ran to the ICU.....relapse followed several months later. I surrendered my licsense for one year and will re-enter KARE next year. If something is working for your recovery dont be so quick to return to the stressful jobs that send us into addiction anyways. I am now working for an insurance company and am 4 months clean. I am in no hurry to be a "real nurse again, because I now know that I am a real addict!"

Re:Take your time! - 2008/05/13 15:14 I have been working as a cashier for one year. i have been finding it hard ti find a jobin nursing again. I am continueing to work with the nurses prf assistance program and am still ongoing urine screenings. I may go back to working as a cna to prove to my old employer that I am doing well. If I do i amy have aq chance at going back to work at this company as a nurse.i also volintaruly turned in my license about 2 years ago after getting caught steeling lortabs from the company i was working at. I was lucky that they did not have me arrested. I just gave the pills back and was terminated from the company that day.

Re:Take your time! - 2008/12/20 23:35 I also was in a big hurry to get back into nursing after I completed my first 2 year suspention from providing direct patient care. Since I didn't take recovery seriously, I relapsed 2 years later. Again I thought everything would be ok if I just found the right nursing job but I did not grasp the recovery part and again I relapsed 2 years later. When I finally surrendered to recovery and made that my priority, I was able to go back to work after 15 months of real sobriety and work safely as a nurse. Please take your time and focus on what is most important-your life.
