There is a way the church can help the hurting move beyond their wounds to experience the healing and forgiveness of Christ. Drawn from the Beatitudes, Celebrate Recovery helps people resolve painful problems in the context of the church as a whole.

“And then there’s pastor John Baker, the founder of Celebrate Recovery… Big John and I shared something in common. We used to drink too much. And our hearts changed, and then we quit. That is a tried-and-true formula. The problem is government is not good at changing hearts. But people like John Baker have been good about it and successful doing that.” —President George W. Bush on Celebrate Recovery and its founder, John Baker, at the Faith-Based and Community Initiatives Conference, March 3, 2004.

NURSING ISSUES

Book Description

Walking Like a Duck

On June 28, 1996, Pat Holloran’s life changed suddenly and forever when Drug Control confronted her for the theft of narcotics from the hospital where she worked.

Pat was working full time on the night shift and taking care of her three children, her husband, and her severely disabled father. Stadol, a narcotic ten times stronger than Morphine, was her drug of choice. She started taking it to help her sleep. She kept taking it because she could not stop. Walking Like a Duck reveals the agony of enduring a punitive disciplinary process to preserve her nursing license; how it impacted her sanity and her career, and how her secrets and lies traumatized her marriage of over twenty years. Walking Like a Duck puts a face on addiction…and recovery.

About the Author
Patricia Holloran has been a nurse for over 30 years. She lives with her husband in Connecticut, and has three grown sons. She continues her nursing career, working in the substance abuse field. She is actively involved in passing legislation to establish a program to help addicted nurses in Connecticut.

Book Description

Leave No Nurse Behind: Nurses Working With DisAbilities

In the midst of a national nursing shortage, many nurses who can and want to work are being denied the opportunity. They are being pushed out of jobs and turned away from unfilled positions, all because they have disabilities.

Eleven nurses who defied disability tell their personal stories of courage and determination in the face of stigma and discrimination, proving that nurses with disabilities have the ability to successfully fill the jobs that so desperately need filling.

A car accident. A fall. A stroke. Depression. Disability can happen to anyone and at any time. By knowing the ins and outs of disability laws as they relate to those in the nursing profession and taking the measures outlined in this book, you can ensure that you will be prepared should disability ever happen to you.

This book serves as both an inspiration and as a practical guide for nurses living and working with disabilities and for students with disabilities pursuing careers in nursing. Nursing with a disability is a challenge, but with proper planning, the right knowledge and perseverance, it is not impossible. The nurses who share their stories here are living proof of that.

For hospital administrators, human resource personnel and nursing educators, this book demonstrates that shutting nurses and nursing students with disabilities out of the profession only does the profession and the patients who need them a disservice.

Let’s try not to leave any nurse who can work and wants to work behind. The cost to society of underutilizing the hearts and minds of these professionals is staggering.

About the Author
Donna Carol Maheady, ARNP, EdD, the mother of a daughter with disabilities, is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University. Dr. Maheady is the author of Nursing Students with Disabilities Change the Course and the founder of www.ExceptionalNurse.com. GRIEF ISSUES

Book Description

Seven Choices

From Publishers Weekly
Many readers will rightly welcome psychologist's Neeld's seven-stage, step-by-step guide to mourning and recovery, accompanied by a description of phases necessary to complete the "grieving process." Based on the author's own experience and that of 60 others, the program requires the mourner to knowingly choose to undergo each stage as it occurs. The book also discusses with compassion physical and emotional traumas to expect and offers sound advice on how to adjust to change and form new life patterns and human bonds.

From Library Journal
Referring in her title to phases of the grieving process and their eventual resolution, the author (a writer and former professor of English) movingly recounts her own widowhood--a halting progress toward understanding recurrent grief and an attainment of a hard-won creative outcome. She offers a well-organized and detailed review of research on grief, with 60 vignettes by others who have lost loved ones through death or divorce. It will be of interest to a broad audience, including families and loved ones experiencing problems consoling or advising the bereaved. This well-written work provides accurate and ample information to help us find pattern and significance in the healing process.

FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS

Book Description

No More Letting Go

“Detachment” has been the standard message of most addiction literature for the last twenty years. The conventional wisdom offered to an addict’s loved ones has been to let the addict “hit bottom” before intervening. Now intervention specialist Debra Jay challenges this belief and offers a bold new approach to treating addiction that provides a practical and spiritual lifeline to families struggling with alcohol or drug abuse.

In No More Letting Go, Jay argues that the traditional advice of “letting go” too often destroys both the addict and the family physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Jay contends that addiction is everybody’s business–not just the addict’s–and addiction doesn’t have the right to trump the welfare of a family.

In short, highly accessible chapters written with warmth, understanding, and compassion, Jay weaves together philosophical and religious thought; new science on the brain function of an addict; the physical and psychological impact of addiction on family members; and poignant, real-life family stories.

No More Letting Go is a powerful, informative guide that provides comfort, hope, and practical advice to anyone affected by a family member’s addiction.

For families of addicts, feeling of fear, shame, confusion over a loved one's addiction can cause deep anxiety, sleepless nights, and even physical illness. And the emotional distress family members suffer is often compounded by the belief that they somehow caused or contributed to their loved one's addiction--or that they could have done something to prevent it. As the heart-wrenching personal stories in this book reveal, family members do not cause their loved one's addiction. Nor can they control of cure addiction. What family members can do is find support, set bounderies, detach with love--and eventually discover how to enjoy life whether their loved one finds recovery of not. "Addict in the Family" is a book about sorrow, deception, and pain. More importantly, it is a book of comfort, hope, and understanding for anyone struggling with a loved one's addicton.

Book Description

Codependent No More

Three years on the New York Times bestseller list, CODEPENDENT NO MORE first identified attitueds, feelings, and behaviors now recognized as hallmarks of codependency. Checklists, activities, and self-tests provide concrete tasks to help readers examine the nuances of codependency in their lives.

REVIEW - Codependency is an important aspect of the interpersonal dynamic among people with addictive disorders. Codependent people find themselves obsessed in often futile ways with controlling someone who repeatedly makes trouble for him- or herself or others. Few people understand this idea as well as Melody Beattie, an author recovering successfully from a variety of addictive disorders and entanglements. In this popular work, she combines real-life stories with lucid explanations of the concepts that define every part of the codependent syndrome. Delivered by the incomparable Gabrielle de Cuir, the program paints a coherent, enlightening picture and offers many constructive ideas for people stuck in a codependent pattern.
